About

Tohu is very much a work in progress - a 'project' that we hope will become a living demonstration of organic growing, natural building and other renewable and green ideas.

The property was set up as a heritage rose nursery and garden along with a pear orchard back in the 80s. We took ownership in 2019.

Our collective background covers organic market gardening, permaculture design and teaching, green politics, school gardens, a bean sprouting business, horticulture training and an environmental information consultancy.

This property is in transition to organic certification with OFNZ. We are replenishing the somewhat neglected and battered orchard with a wide variety of heritage and other fruit and nut plantings. We have much more to do on our list, with small-scale coppicing, willow beds, native restoration, etc.

The previous owners added a wedding venue to the property and we are starting to use this for courses and workshops, and a gathering place for like-minded folk.

The heritage rose business operates as Trinity Farm and is open to the public from Labour Weekend through to the weekend following Valentine's day. We charge a small fee for enjoying the gardens and offer refreshments. The nursery has roses for sale throughout the year and these can be ordered via the website.
